José Manuel Rey had already captained Venezuela before he pulled on the red and black of Deportivo Lara .
Lara took the Apertura in 2011, came back and took the Clausura in 2012, and finished the campaign on 83 points.
Lara won the Clausura again in 2017 and once more in 2018, and both times lost the Serie Final that decides the national title.
In 2023 the Primera División expelled Lara over unpaid debts. The club spent the following years outside the top flight and returned to competition in the Segunda División in 2026.
