Manuel Ugarte was 15 when Fénix handed him a debut in the top flight. He left Capurro for Sporting, then Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, and the national team.

The founders were young men from Capurro themselves, in July 1916, picking up after a neighbourhood side called Guaraní folded three years earlier. They named the new club after the bird that comes back. The purple and white were meant to stand for eternity and purity.

Fénix first reached the top division in 1923, through the gap opened by the split that produced a rival federation. Since then the club has gone up and down often enough to hold the record for Segunda División titles, seven of them, the first in 1956 and the most recent in 2009.

They talk about 2002 and 2003, when Juan Ramón Carrasco had the team third in the championship and winning the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores twice running. The two qualifications took Fénix into the Copa Libertadores in 2003 and 2004. In the first of those campaigns they beat Cruz Azul 6-1, a result still recited around the ground.

Home is Parque Capurro, in the district the club is named for. The land came from the municipality on a concession that expired more than two decades ago.

In more than a century Fénix has never won the Primera División, and never won the Uruguayan Cup. The trophy cabinet holds second and third tiers, two Liguillas, and the memory of six goals against a Mexican side.
