Goztepe

The argument started on a train. Six men returning to Izmir fell out with Altay, and by the time they reached the Meze casino in the Göztepe district they had decided to start something of their own. That was 14 June 1925.

The name did not survive the decade untouched. Between 1937 and 1939 Göztepe merged with Izmirspor and Egespor and played as Doğanspor, then walked back out of the arrangement and reclaimed the old name.

The years worth talking about came at the end of the 1960s. At home they took the Turkish Cup in 1969 and again in 1970, and the Super Cup in 1970. Before any of that, in 1950, they had won the national championship, the only time they have done it.

Promotion back to the Süper Lig arrived on 4 June 2017, ending fourteen years away. They went down again, and came back again on 28 April 2024 with a 2-0 win over Gençlerbirliği.

In August 2022 the British company Sport Republic bought 70 per cent of the club — the first foreign owner in Turkish sport — and Rasmus Ankersen became the first foreign president of a Turkish club. The team plays in yellow and red at the Gürsel Aksel Stadium, opened in January 2020, which holds 23,376.
