İstanbul Başakşehir

The 2019-20 Süper Lig table ended with a name at the top that had not been there before. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş had shared the Turkish title between them for decades; that season İstanbul Başakşehir won the league. Okan Buruk was the coach who took them there.

The club that won it had only reached the top flight in 2014, promoted as champions of the TFF First League, and had spent the years before that under a different name and different colours. It began in 1990 as a merger of amateur sides in Istanbul, carrying the name İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor. The 2014 rebrand changed the name, the badge and the colours together — orange and navy since then, which is why Turkish reporting calls them the Turuncu-lacivertliler, though the official nickname is Boz Baykuşlar, the Grey Owls.

Home is the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium in the district the club is named after, holding a little over 17,000.

The title brought a Champions League group the following autumn: PSG, Manchester United and RB Leipzig in Group H. Başakşehir had gone further in Europe the season they won the league, reaching the Europa League last 16 before Copenhagen ended it, and they matched that in the Conference League in 2022-23, going out to Gent.

Three Turkish Cup finals have come and gone without a win. The first, in 2010-11, was the closest: 2-2 after extra time against Beşiktaş, settled on penalties. Galatasaray beat them in the 2016-17 final, Fenerbahçe won the 2022-23 final 2-0.

He was in charge for the only season in which a club outside the Istanbul big three finished first.
