The club itself was stitched together on 29 January 1976, when América Futebol Clube and Caxias Futebol Clube merged into one side — and that side won the Catarinense in its very first season, which is where the nickname "Nasceu Campeão" comes from. It was not a one-off: Joinville went on to take the state title twelve times in all, including eight in a row between 1978 and 1985.
Beyond the state, the honours board is thinner but not empty. The Série C crown came in 2011, the Copa Santa Catarina five times over, most recently in 2020. Marcão, who wore the shirt from 1995 to 2005 before moving into the dugout as head coach, spans both eras.
