Ratinho arrived on the wing in 1962 and stayed three seasons, part of the run that still defines Marcílio Dias: four finals of the Campeonato Catarinense between 1960 and 1967, broken by a single title in 1963.

The team had started out on the water, not the pitch, named for a sailor who became a naval hero. Their meetings are still called the Clássico de Itajaí.

The club's better modern seasons have come in shorter, regional competitions rather than the state's top flight: the Copa Santa Catarina three times, in 2007, 2022 and 2023, and in 2007 that title was paired with the Recopa Sul-Brasileira for a rare double. Three Série B titles, in 1999, 2010 and 2013, mark how often the club has had to work its way back up rather than hold its place. In 2023 it stayed in the top division only by a narrow margin, then lost the Recopa Catarinense final that year and again the next.
