Portuguese immigrants in Caracas wanted a team that carried the name of the one they had left behind, and in 1959 they built one.
Promoted from the Segunda División in 1985, Marítimo won the Venezuelan Primera División in 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1993, with Copa Venezuela wins in 1988 and 1989 in between. Rafa Santana was the coach through that period. The goalkeeper Daniel Nikolac went 970 consecutive minutes without conceding, and Franco Rizzi captained the side.
In 1987–88 Herbert Márquez joined Marítimo Funchal and became the first Venezuelan to play in a top division in Europe.
The decline came in the mid-1990s. Financial trouble and disputes with the Venezuelan league's administrators ended the original club in 1995. The new club took over the licence of ULA FC and started again in the Segunda División, based on the coast in La Guaira state. Its ground at Camurí Chico in Caraballeda holds 1,200 people. Deportivo La Guaira, from the same state, is the nearest rival.
