Estadio Rommel Fernández sits in Panama City and reopened in its current form after a renovation completed in 2023–2024, work that trimmed the ground down to 23,000 seats and left it tighter and louder for a team that plays under the shadow of the canal running through the country's centre.

The federation behind the side, FEPAFUT, was founded in 1937 and joined FIFA the following year; the national team played its first official match on 12 February 1938, against Venezuela. Red is worn at home in tribute to the flag, white away, with a dark navy kit kept in reserve. The nickname Los Canaleros refers to the Panama Canal itself, and supporters filling the stands on matchdays are known as La Marea Roja, the red tide.

Costa Rica sharpens everything more than any other opponent, a fixture known on both sides of the border as the Clásico del Istmo.

No date matters more than 11 October 2017. A 2-1 win over Costa Rica that night sent Panama to a World Cup for the first time, and the government marked the occasion by declaring it a national holiday. Román Torres scored the goal that settled it; Felipe Baloy later scored the country's first-ever World Cup goal, in Russia. Panama has since qualified again, for the 2026 tournament.

Aníbal Godoy wears the captain's armband now, in a side still measured against Gabriel Gómez, whose 148 caps remain more than anyone else has played for Panama.
