Progreso are back among Uruguay's Primera División sides.

In 1989, Progreso won the Uruguayan championship, finishing 5 points clear of Nacional in a single-round tournament. Four years earlier the club had taken the Torneo Competencia, in 1985. Neither has been repeated.

The club was formed on 30 April 1917 by workers in the north of Montevideo, and played its early years in white shirts with black stripes. The change to red and yellow came later, in sympathy with the Spanish revolution — the colours of Catalonia. They stuck, and the nickname Aurirrojos came with them.

Between the championship years and the founding lie decades in the lower divisions: Intermedia titles in 1938 and 1939, then again in 1956 and 1963, a Second Division championship in 1945. The club has spent more of its life climbing than defending.

Home is Parque Abraham Paladino, a compact ground in the Paso de la Arena district of Montevideo. It holds around 5,400, which is small by the standards of the league Progreso now play in — visiting sides from the big Montevideo clubs arrive at a ground where the crowd sits close enough to be heard by everyone on the pitch.
