The team began as a schoolboys' side at the Capuchin Catholic school in the Nuevo París district of Montevideo, formally constituted on 15 February 1915. It never left the city, and it never really left the ridge either: the ground it settled on, the Belvedere, sits on high ground in a neighbourhood the club has been tied to ever since. Hence the second nickname, Los negros de la cuchilla .

The first nickname came from the shirt. Since 1919 Liverpool have worn a light blue body with white sleeves, black shorts and black socks; the pairing of celeste and black gave them Negriazules .

They beat Peñarol 3-0 across the two legs of the final, 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.

It was closed in December 2025 and demolished the following year, and Liverpool are now building the Nuevo Estadio Belvedere on the same ridge, with room planned for between 15,000 and 20,000.
