Peñarol's founders spent their days laying track for the Central Uruguay Railway, and when they wanted a football and cricket club, they built the colours to match the job: yellow and black, taken from Stephenson's Rocket, the locomotive that ran the line. That was 1891, and the club they formed carried the railway's name, Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, for more than two decades before the football side split off and adopted the name Peñarol in December 1913. Uruguay's football association never treated that as a fresh start — it counts the club's history back to the original railway workers, and the honours list follows the same logic.

That list runs to 54 Uruguayan league titles.

The club now plays at the Estadio Campeón del Siglo, opened in 2016.
