Raja Casablanca

In the 1959–60 season Raja held the best goal difference in a triangular championship tournament, then refused to take the field for it at all. That kind of defiance was baked in from the start: the club had been formed in Casablanca on 20 March 1949 by nationalists and resistance fighters under French colonial rule, fielding only Moroccan players. Promotion to the first division followed in 1951.

The green and white shirts take their colour from the star on the national flag, calling it the Green Eagles and, just as often, Vox Populi — the people's club. Wydad AC sit across the city as the old rival.

Nothing in the club's history matches 1995 to 2001, when a merger with Olympique de Casablanca strengthened the squad and Raja went on to win six league titles in a row. The same era produced the CAF Champions League wins of 1997 and 1999, either side of the first in 1989, and Mustapha Moustawdaa captained the side that lifted the 1997 trophy. Abdelmajid Dolmy, who played 550 times for the club between 1970 and 1987. In 2000, Raja became the first African club to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, and returned to a final in 2013, where Bayern Munich beat them.
