Sporting go into the 2025/26 Primeira Liga as back-to-back champions, having retained the title in 2025 a year after ending an 18-season wait for it in 2021 under Rúben Amorim. The Alvalade side added the Taça de Portugal in 2025 as well, a domestic double that came with a rebuilt stadium: the renovation of the Estádio José Alvalade was finished in time for this season, lifting capacity to 52,707.

The club was founded on 1 July 1906, formed from an earlier body called Campo Grande Sporting Clube on land in Lumiar that had belonged to the grandfather of one of its founders, the Viscount of Alvalade — the source of the stadium's name ever since. Green shirts with white hoops go back to the founding; the black shorts were added in 1915.

No academy graduate carries more weight than Cristiano Ronaldo, who came through Sporting's youth ranks before his move to Manchester United in 2003, following Luís Figo out of the same production line a decade earlier. Neither, though, matches Fernando Peyroteo, one of the "Five Violins" forward line of the 1940s and 1950s, who scored 544 goals for the club and remains the reference point whenever a Sporting striker is judged.

The one European trophy came in 1964, when Sporting beat MTK Budapest in a Cup Winners' Cup final replay, 1-0. A UEFA Cup final followed in 2005, lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow on home ground. Domestically the record now stands at 21 league titles and 18 Portuguese Cups.
