In 2013, a fifteen-year-old academy defender made his first-team debut for Västerås SK. Victor Lindelöf went on to captain Sweden and play for Manchester United, but the season that shaped the club's recent identity came later, and it did not involve him at all: in 2023, and again in 2025, Västerås SK won Superettan, Sweden's second tier, twice in three years.

The club's own top-flight ceiling has stayed remarkably low for over a century. Founded on 29 January 1904 as the football section of the multi-sport Västerås Sportklubb — the ice hockey side split off as its own club in 1976 — VSK's best league finish anywhere near the top remains 11th, set in the 1955/56 season.

Home matches have been played at the Hitachi Energy Arena since 2008, a 7,000-capacity ground with 4,126 seated places that replaced Arosvallen. The nickname Grönvitt, Green-White, comes straight from the club's colours and gets aired loudest against Västerås IK, whose meetings with VSK make up the Västeråsderbyt, and against IK Brage in the wider regional rivalry.

Lindelöf remains the name attached to the club's academy output, but Sweden internationals have passed through Västerås before and since, among them Pontus Kämark, who took bronze at the 1994 World Cup. The debut that put a fifteen-year-old on the pitch for the first team is still the story locals reach for first.
