Vitoria

Two brothers, Arthur and Artêmio Valente, started this one as a cricket club in Salvador, calling it Club de Cricket Victoria before football took over and the name settled into Esporte Clube Vitória in 1946. The founding date, 13 May 1899, sits among the oldest in Bahia, and the state championship record backs that age up: 22 Campeonato Baiano titles, stretching from 1908 and 1909 through to a run of wins in the 2000s.

The Barradão, formally Estádio Manoel Barradas, holds 34,535 and has been the club's ground through the bulk of that history. In red and black, Vitória carry the nickname Leão da Barra, and the honours go beyond the state title: four Copa do Nordeste wins, the last of them in 2010, the same year the club also won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B to reach the top flight. On the sand, Vitória's beach football side has dominated the Campeonato Baiano de Futebol de Areia for years running, picking up the title in every edition from 2008 to 2023.

None of that history means as much in Salvador as the fixture against Bahia. The two clubs have shared the city since the early twentieth century, and the Ba-Vi derby carries the weight of more than a hundred years of meetings with no love lost between the two sets of supporters.
