The Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament stands as Afghanistan’s premier first-class cricket competition. Organized by the Afghanistan Cricket Board, the competition reached its current four-day format in 2014 after initially operating as a three-day event. International Cricket Council recognition followed in 2017, cementing its status at the top of the domestic pyramid.
The tournament currently features four franchise-style teams: Hindukush Strikers, Mah-e-Par Stars, Maiwand Champions, and Pamir Legends. This configuration replaced a previous regional structure in a major rebranding in 2023. The season follows a double round-robin group stage where each side plays every other team twice. The top two teams progress to a single final to determine the winner.
Maiwand Champions enter their title defence as the current champions after defeating Mah-e-Par Stars in the 2025 edition. Individual brilliance remains a highlight, with Usman Noori holding the record for the highest individual score. He amassed 339 runs during the 2024–25 campaign, a feat that stands as the highest individual score in the tournament’s history.
The competition operates independently of the lower-tier Mirwais Nika Provincial 3-Day Tournament. While the second tier utilizes a three-day format, the Ahmad Shah Abdali Tournament employs a four-day duration. Selection for the premier competition relies on performances in the lower tier rather than a formal promotion or relegation system. The governing body has secured title sponsorship from entities including Alokozay, Mahawala, and SuperCola.
The tournament serves as the primary pathway for aspiring cricketers within Afghanistan. By hosting matches domestically, the competition provides a consistent platform for high-level first-class cricket. The transition from regional to franchise teams aimed to enhance the commercial and competitive appeal of the sport. Success in this tournament offers players visibility for national selection.
