About

The County Championship stands as the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales. Organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the tournament traces its origins to 18 December 1889, when representatives of eight leading county clubs formally constituted the competition. It began play in the 1890 season, establishing a continuous tradition of four-day matches that has defined English cricket for over a century. The structure currently divides eighteen first-class counties into two divisions: Division One, containing ten teams, and Division Two, with eight. Each side plays fourteen home and away fixtures over the course of the season. A unique points system rewards victory with sixteen points, while a draw or tie secures eight. Additional batting and bowling bonus points are awarded based on performance within the first 110 overs of the opening innings, adding tactical depth to the eight-hour daily sessions. The league operates on a 'two-up, two-down' promotion and relegation basis, ensuring competitive balance between the tiers. Yorkshire holds the record for success, having claimed thirty-three titles throughout the competition's history. In recent years, the landscape has shifted, with Nottinghamshire capturing their seventh title in the 2024 season, following victories by Surrey in 2022 and Lancashire in 2023. The tournament has also seen brief interruptions and format changes, such as the 2021 introduction of the Bob Willis Trophy as a standalone final for Division One teams before its discontinuation. Named the Rothesay County Championship from 2026, the competition remains distinct from the shorter Metro Bank One-Day Cup and the Vitality Blast, prioritizing endurance and technique in its four-day format.
