The format for the 2024 edition involved ten teams divided into two groups of five. Teams played a round-robin structure within their groups. The top two sides from each group advanced to the semi-finals, with the winners of those matches earning qualification for the main World Cup. In the 2024 edition, held in Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka and Scotland secured their spots. Sri Lanka won the tournament by defeating Scotland by 68 runs in the final. Scotland's achievement was historic, marking their first-ever spot in the Women's T20 World Cup.

Historical winners include Ireland (2015), Bangladesh (2019), and Scotland (2023). Bangladesh is noted as the most successful nation in the tournament's history with four titles. The tournament was rebranded from its original name to the Global Qualifier to distinguish it from regional qualifiers. The 2022 and 2024 editions were hosted in the UAE, while the 2026 edition is scheduled for Nepal.
