Bergischer HC Women

Solingen has handball on both sides of a merger: in 2006 LTV Wuppertal and SG Solingen folded their teams together to form Bergischer HC, and the women's side that grew out of it plays under the same blue and white, the same "Lions" name as the men, without ever needing a name of its own.

The team trains and plays out of the Klingenhalle, occasionally borrowing the Uni-Halle across in Wuppertal, and sits in the 2. Handball-Bundesliga Frauen, a rung below the men's side that has spent recent seasons chasing promotion and cup finals of their own.

Svenja Mann has been the name to watch in the back court: her form at right back earned her a place in the Team of the Season for 2025/26 in the second-tier women's league, the kind of individual recognition that rarely comes with team silverware attached.

That silverware has stayed elusive. The 2025/26 DHB-Pokal ended at the first hurdle, Frisch Auf Göppingen sending them out 20:27, a scoreline that left no room for arguing the toss.

Closer to home, there is still a fixture with an edge to it. Solingen's other side, HSV Solingen-Gräfrath, gives the women's team its one real derby, played out under a name locals have used for years: the Solinger Derby.
