The first game on record was played there in 1935, between local sides ŠK Podbrezová and ŠK Brezno. A senior team began entering regional competition only in 1985.
The name HK Brezno dates to 2003, when the club was reorganised. That reorganisation coincided with a run of success in the 2. hokejová liga, won in 2002–03, 2003–04 and again in 2008–09, the last of those titles earning promotion to the 1. Liga.
Home games are played at Aréna Brezno, known locally as the Zimný štadión Ladislava Horského, in red, white and black.
Maroš Surový is the name attached most closely to the club. Born in Brezno, he left to play for HC '05 Banská Bystrica in the Extraliga before coming back to HK Brezno in the 1. Liga, where he became its leading scorer — a local who went up and returned.
