Dolný Kubín gave up its place in the Slovak 1. Liga before the 2011–12 season not because it went down on the ice but because the books did not add up. The club had spent four seasons in the second tier, finishing thirteenth in its last, and pulling out rather than fighting relegation left the Orava region without a team above the third division for the first time in years.
It went back to the 2. Liga and answered with the title in 2012–13, then added bronze a decade later, in 2022–23. Between those two results sits a club that has made its name less through senior silverware than through the players it sent elsewhere: the Zimný štadión in Dolný Kubín has watched teenagers leave for bigger leagues more often than it has watched the Bears lift anything themselves.
Against Ružomberok, the other side of the Orava valley, the games still carry the weight of a derby even in the lower tiers.
The name people in Dolný Kubín bring up first is Martin Réway, who left the club's youth ranks for a route that took him through the Czech Extraliga and the KHL and as far as an NHL draft. He never played a senior game for the Bears, but the academy that shaped him is the reason the club is still spoken of beyond the Orava region at all.
