Chester-le-Street built its identity on cricket at the Riverside Ground. The England and Wales Cricket Board named Durham one of eight Tier One counties in 2025, and the county responded by fielding a fully professional women's side rather than sending players through a regional hub, as had been the arrangement for years.

Before that shift, the county's cricketers moved through a succession of shared setups: the Northern Diamonds hub from 2020, and before that the North East Warriors, formed jointly with Northumberland. The original Durham Women team, which ran from 2001 to 2019, took the Women's County Championship Division 3 three times, in 2003, 2011 and 2018, work that predates the professional era by a generation but still counts as the earliest silverware attached to the county's women's cricket.

Hollie Armitage captains the new side, with Danielle Hazell, who built her career as an England off-spinner, now coaching it. The squad carries an international edge in Mady Villiers and the Australian pair Tahlia Wilson and Heather Graham, while Harriet Robson has come through the county's own academy system rather than arriving from elsewhere.

The Riverside itself scales with the occasion: 5,000 for the domestic fixtures Durham's women play there, expanding toward 17,000 when internationals are staged on the same square.

Northumberland Women sit closest as rivals, a relationship sharpened by the fact that the two counties were, until recently, teammates rather than opponents inside the Warriors set-up. Splitting back into separate professional and county structures turned a shared dressing room into the fixture Durham's supporters now watch most closely.
