In the spring of 2017 the KHL declared every player on Dynamo Moscow's roster a free agent at once — the club owed wages it could not pay. Dynamo rebuilt and kept its place in the top flight regardless.

That founding came on 22 December 1946. The Gagarin Cup, the one silverware that matters most to a KHL side, came twice running, in 2012 and 2013, not long after Dynamo had spent two seasons folded into a merger with HC MVD and then split back out under its own name.

Alexander Maltsev's number hangs retired above the ice along with a handful of others from the Vasiliev-Davydov-Yurzinov generation that carried the club through its Soviet-era peak. The academy's more recent claim runs the other way: Alexander Ovechkin came up through Dynamo's youth ranks before his name became attached to a different league altogether.

Between 2008 and 2018 home games moved out to the Khimki Ice Palace while the old Dynamo Stadium was rebuilt from the ground up; the club has played on VTB Arena's smaller rink, named for Arkady Chernyshev, ever since. It seats 10,523.
