In the 2013/14 final of the Kharlamov Cup, MHC Spartak beat Krasnaya Armiya 4-3, and a few months later, in Ufa, its graduates went further still, edging HC Tolpar 2-1 in a shootout to take the IIHF World U20 Club Challenge. Arseny Khatsey, named the most valuable player of that playoff run, became the clearest face of a group that had been assembled only five years earlier, when the Junior Hockey League itself came into being in 2009 and Spartak was built to compete in it from the first season.

The club trained and played for years at the Small Arena of the Luzhniki complex before moving to its own rink, the Ice Palace 'Legends of Hockey — Sokolniki', which holds around 1,500 people. It is a small ground for a club whose graduates have gone on to the NHL, among them goaltender Igor Shesterkin, now with the New York Rangers, and defenceman Vladislav Provolnev, who has played for Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and, back in Russia, Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

A second Kharlamov Cup arrived in 2024/25, when Spartak defeated SKA-1946 4-3 in the final and also won the Golden Division of the Western Conference that season, more than a decade after the first. In between, the club had come close once more, losing the 2012/13 final to Omskie Yastreby.

None of it carries the weight of the fixture with Krasnaya Armiya, the junior side of CSKA Moscow. The two have met more than 95 times, a rivalry sharpened by that 2014 final and kept alive as a derby every season since, with the history between Moscow's two clubs settled again each time the sides line up.
