Sylwester Ziółkowski took MKS Grudziądz up from the second tier with the II Liga championship in 2014/2015, and he did it wearing two hats, coaching the side while also serving as club president. Promotion to the I Liga followed in 2016, built partly on the scoring of Mateusz Kostrzewa.

The club traces its handball back to 1950, when a section was set up at RUCH Grudziądz; it went through a spell as STOMIL Grudziądz from 1968, taking the regional title five times in the first half of the 1970s, before folding after the 1990/1991 season as the economic crisis bit. What plays now was established in 1998 by activists and former players who wanted the game back in the city, and it competes under the sponsorship-driven name MKS Sphinx Grudziądz.

Derby weeks against AZS UMK Toruń carry their own weight locally, played out as the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Derby.

Behind the senior side sits a youth set-up that has produced its own results, and it is from that academy that Mateusz Lenckowski came through to the first team, the kind of player the club points to when it talks about what the youth work is for.
