Gummersbach

Twelve German championships between 1966 and 1991 tell only part of it; VfL Gummersbach spent those same years collecting five European Champions League trophies, a run no German club has matched since.

The club grew out of a gymnastics society founded on 3 March 1861; handball did not enter the picture until 1925, and the present name was settled in 1937 after a merger with SSV Gummersbach. What followed took two decades to build and one to dominate: from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s Gummersbach won five DHB-Pokal titles alongside the league and European silverware, a period players and supporters still measure the club against.

Stefan Kretzschmar wore the shirt during leaner years than that golden run, but it was Daniel Narcisse who carried the club's name furthest afterward, winning Olympic gold with France in 2008 and 2012 and multiple world titles while at Gummersbach.

The following decades were harder. A deficit of roughly two million euros cost the club its Bundesliga licence in 2011; supporters raised enough between them to keep it alive. Relegation to the 2. Bundesliga in 2019 was a first in the club's history, and the return took three seasons, sealed by winning the second-tier title in 2021–22.

Home matches are shared between the Schwalbe-Arena, holding just over 4,000, and, for the occasions that demand more, the Lanxess Arena in Cologne — a reminder that Gummersbach, a town of modest size in North Rhine-Westphalia, once needed a bigger stage than its own to hold what the club had become.
