HSG Freiburg Women

Three times over — 2019, 2022 and 2025 — HSG Freiburg Frauen won the 3. Liga Süd. A fourth title came in between, the 3. Liga Süd-West in 2023.

The team grew in 1999 out of a merger between the handball sections of Freie Turnerschaft and Freiburger Fußballclub, brought together under the club's first chairman, Thomas Hohwieler, and his deputy, Horst Betz. The women's side was part of the new club from that first day.

Igor Bojic ran the team for years and took it through much of that promotion cycle before stepping aside for the 2025/26 season, handing over to Simon Rittemann. Carolin Spinner, once the side's captain, has done her work on the line.

Matches against SV Allensbach are billed locally as the Südbaden derby. The city recognised that grassroots identity early, naming the team its Team of the Year back in 2009.

With Rittemann now in charge, the task facing HSG Freiburg Frauen is the one that has defined the last several seasons: staying in the 2. Bundesliga long enough to stop the promotion-relegation cycle repeating itself.
