In 2012, a women's handball side from a town walked into Poland's second tier, playing as Polonia Kępno. The club simply turned up in the I Liga.

The name changed with the money behind it. Polonia gave way to SPR Kępno, and the team now plays as SPR Lenart Kępno, carrying the name of the local furniture manufacturer that backs the club. Supporters still call the side Kępnianki, a name that has outlasted every rebrand on the shirt.

Matches are played at the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa "Projekt Kępno," a hall that seats 558 on its main tribune — a capacity that puts a ceiling on the occasion but also means there is rarely a seat spared for a neutral. White and blue are the club's colours, and neither the honours boards nor the record books carry a league title or cup for the handball section; the club's history is one of staying in competition rather than winning it.

What sharpens a Kępnianki season is not a single old rival but the crowded company of the leagues they occupy: II Liga and I Liga handball in Poland are thick with small-town clubs fighting over the same handful of promotion and relegation places, and for Kępno those fixtures against similarly sized towns carry more weight than anything played out in front of an empty away end.
