Kosice

Ten Slovak Extraliga titles is not a run any other club in the country can match. Between those bookends sits a stretch, 2009 to 2011, when Košice won three straight, and an earlier one, 1995 to 1999, when it took the title twice either side of its single IIHF Continental Cup, in 1998.

The club traces to 1962, when it was formed as the army side VTJ Dukla Košice, though organised hockey in the city goes back to 1921. What followed was a run of names tied to whoever backed it. The nickname stuck regardless — Oceliari, the Steelers, after the U. S. Steel plant that still anchors the local economy, with Hutníci, the Steelworkers, used almost as often.

Jan Faith's number 9 hangs retired from the rafters, and Ladislav Troják lent his name to the arena itself, a link between the club's amateur-era past and the modern Steel Aréna that opened in 2006, replacing the old Lokomotíva Stadium. Before the extraliga era, the club had already won the Czechoslovak league twice, in 1986 and 1988, and the Tatra Cup eleven times across four decades, a tournament it kept coming back to win long after most rivals had stopped treating it as a priority.

No fixture in Slovak hockey carries the weight of Košice against Slovan Bratislava, the country's two dominant clubs meeting as the Slovan–Košice derby. Closer to home, the Východniarske derby against Poprad settles a smaller but sharper argument: which eastern Slovak town's team matters more.
