Every WNCL final that matters tends to come down to New South Wales against Queensland Fire, and for the better part of two decades there was rarely much doubt about who walked away with the trophy. The Breakers won nineteen straight titles between 2000/01 and 2018/19, a run that turned the fixture into the closest thing women's domestic cricket in Australia has to a settled rivalry, even without a name attached to it.

The team's history reaches back to the formation of the New South Wales Women's Cricket Association in January 1928, though the first representative match on record did not come until 1934, against a touring England side at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Breakers joined the Women's National Cricket League for its inaugural 1996/97 season and have collected the championship 21 times since, most recently in 2024/25.

North Sydney Oval has been the team's home ground, holding around 10,000 people, though matches have also been played at Hurstville Oval and Blacktown ISP Oval depending on the season.

Cricket New South Wales runs the team out of light blue and dark blue, colours that have stayed with the Breakers through the shift from a handful of interstate carnivals to a fully professional league. Whatever else changes about the competition, the fixture against Queensland Fire still tends to decide where the trophy ends up.
