St Kilda gave the Victoria women's side its home ground long before women's cricket had a name for itself outside the state championships, and Junction Oval, with room for 7,000, has held most of its matches since 2013. The team traces itself to a match against New South Wales on 17 March 1891.

For much of the twentieth century Victoria simply won. Between 1933–34 and 1995–96 the side took the Australian Women's Cricket Championships 36 times; there, the two titles came in 2002–03 and 2004–05, against eleven runner-up finishes. Between those two eras the team spent time playing under the name Victorian Spirit, from the league's start until 2011–12, when it reverted to Victoria. In the Twenty20 format the side found another run of form, taking the Australian Women's Twenty20 Cup three years running from 2009–10.

Cathryn Fitzpatrick, one of the fastest bowlers the women's game produced, took over as head coach in 2007–08, the first woman to hold the post. The current squad has carried names recognisable well beyond Victoria — Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry among them — while Andrew Christie took charge of the coaching in 2024.

The navy blue and grey still return, most seasons, to the same ground by the bay in St Kilda.
