Those earliest years began in 1935, when the side later known as the Scorpions took the field against Victoria in the Australian Women's Cricket Championships. The Scorpions name has since been dropped: since March 2024 the team plays again as South Australia.
South Australia have reached the final five times since 1997–98 and won it once, in 2015–16, beating New South Wales for the Ruth Preddy Cup.
Belinda Clark and Betty Wilson belong to the same earlier era of the state's cricket. The current squad carries that forward through internationals such as Megan Schutt, Ashleigh Gardner and Alyssa Healy.
