Tatran Presov

Prešov's handball section grew out of a factory sports club, Slavia ČSSZ, formed in 1952, and took the Tatran name a year later when the works team was folded into the wider Tatran sports association. Under the old Czechoslovak League the club won three titles, in 1969, 1971 and 1993, though that run of success sat inside a federation that no longer exists.

What followed after Slovak independence has no real parallel in the country's handball. Since 2004 Tatran has been champion twenty times, missing out only rarely across two decades, a stretch that owes much to Miloslav Chmeliar, who took over the presidency in 2001, put the club's finances in order and watched the side turn that stability into a league monopoly from 2004 through 2018. The Slovak Cup has gone the same way: twenty-six wins, the most recent added in 2026.

European football has been less kind. The one deep run came in 1971/72, a semi-final in the European Champions Cup, and nothing since has matched it. Domestically the closest thing to resistance comes from HK Košice, and the two sides' meetings are known locally as the Východniarske derby, the Eastern derby.

The academy has done its share of the work too, with Lukáš Urban and Erik Fenár both coming through the youth ranks rather than arriving ready-made, and the current squad still leans on imports such as Dainis Krištopāns to carry the international weight the club's own production line hasn't fully replaced. The Tatran Handball Arena holds 4,870.
