Because that is what HC Innsbruck was. Innsbrucker EV, ten-time Austrian champion between 1975 and 1989, went under in 1994 after relegation and debt, and the club that replaced it started again in the second tier under the name HC Innsbruck. The sponsorship money of Tiroler Wasserkraft arrived in 1999.

Promotion back to the top flight took until 2011–12, when HC TWK Innsbruck won the Austrian National League final against EC Dornbirn under captain Rem Murray, whose number 17 hangs alongside Mössmer's in the TIWAG Arena. In the top-flight ICE Hockey League since, the club has reached several semi-finals without going further. The 2023–24 Champions Hockey League campaign got them into the round of 16, where Lukko Rauma ended the run.
