Viborg Women

Viborg took shape in the spring of 1936, when the town's sports scene produced Idrætsklubben Viborg, a name it carried only a few years before becoming Håndboldklubben Viborg in 1939. The men's side eventually gave way entirely: in 2013 it withdrew so the club could put its full resources behind the women's team, a decision that followed rather than preceded the club's rise to the top of European handball.

That rise began in earnest once Ulrik Wilbek took the team into the top flight in 1989. What followed was a run few Danish clubs have matched: fourteen national championships between 1994 and 2014, eleven Danish Cups, and three EHF Champions League titles, won in 2006, 2009 and 2010. The 2008/2009 season stands apart even within that record — Viborg took the league, the cup and the European title in the same campaign, a treble the club has not repeated since. A financial crisis in 2015, tied to the collapse of sponsor Hellerup Finans, tested what that success had built, though the club's honours board was already long since filled.

Matches against FC Midtjylland Håndbold carry the weight of a derby now watched across Danish women's handball, while games with Ikast Håndbold stay closer to home, a Midtjylland rivalry rooted in geography rather than history.

Few names attach to Viborg as firmly as Rikke Skov's. She played for the club from 1994 to 2016, more than two decades spanning nearly every trophy in that run, and stands as the player through whom the club's own history is most often told.
