Skanderborg Women

Skanderborg have made a habit of staying up rather than climbing further: since returning to the Damehåndboldligaen in 2018, the women's side has twice had to win play-outs or tie-breakers to keep its place, most recently in the 2024-2025 season. That pattern, rather than any run at a trophy, defines where the club stands now.

The club dates to 1982, when two local sides, Stilling-Skanderborg and Vrold-Skanderborg Håndboldklub, merged into one. Promotion to the top flight did not come until 2016, when Skanderborg won the 1. Division, and a second-place finish there in 2018 sent them back up for good. Neither the Damehåndboldligaen title nor the Danish Cup has followed.

What changed the shape of the club more than results on court was the men's side leaving the name behind: in 2021 the men's team merged into Aarhus Håndbold to form Skanderborg Aarhus Håndbold, and the women's team was left as the senior side still carrying the Skanderborg name on its own. Local matches against Aarhus United, framed as the East Jutland derby, keep that old connection alive on the calendar even after the split.

The club's own pipeline has done more for it than the transfer market. SHEA, the Skanderborg Håndbold Elite Akademi set up in 2008, has sent players such as Anna Kristensen and Kristina Jørgensen through to the senior side.

What still eludes Skanderborg is a season where survival in the top flight is not the main story.
