About

The CONCACAF League was a secondary continental club football competition organized by CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football). Established in 2017, the tournament served as a direct qualifier for the primary CONCACAF Champions League, previously known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The competition offered a pathway for mid-table teams from smaller associations, providing continental exposure before being discontinued after the 2022 edition. Its role was absorbed by an expanded Champions Cup, which introduced regional qualifiers such as the CONCACAF Central American Cup and the CONCACAF Caribbean Cup starting in 2024.

The format evolved over its six editions, beginning with 16 teams in the inaugural 2017–18 season and expanding to 22 teams from 2019 onwards. Matches were typically contested in two-legged knockout ties, with a preliminary round introduced in later years for lower-seeded entrants. The top six teams, comprising the four semifinalists and the two best-performing quarterfinal losers, earned qualification for the Champions League, alongside the tournament winner. The field included clubs from Central America and the Caribbean, with Canada receiving one slot, marking the first inclusion of a Canadian club, Forge FC, in the 2019 edition.

C.D. Olimpia of Honduras holds the record for most titles, having won the competition twice, in 2017 and 2022. Costa Rican clubs dominated the early years, securing three consecutive titles from 2018 to 2020 through Herediano, Saprissa, and Alajuelense. Motagua finished as runner-up three times, while Johan Venegas of Saprissa became the only player to win the Golden Boot twice, in 2019 and 2020. The finals were always decided over two legs, with the 2017 final requiring a penalty shootout after a 1–1 aggregate draw. The 2020 edition was adjusted due to the pandemic, featuring single-leg ties at centralized locations.
