César Morales put together a group of young players in San Miguelito in 1989 and called them Sporting '89 — a youth academy first. Eight years on, the team beat Chorrillo in a promotion play-off and stepped into Panama's top flight on 19 July 1997. The club packed up for Antón, in Coclé province, playing there under a different name before returning home in 2007 as Sporting San Miguelito.

The homecoming paid off in 2013, when Sporting won the Clausura, beating San Francisco 4-1 in the final. Ricardo Clarke finished the tournament as its top scorer, with 10 goals including one in that final; Darwin Pinzón, back for a second spell at the club, scored twice in the same match; and goalkeeper Álex Rodríguez, an academy graduate, was named the division's best. Two later finals went the other way — the 2014 Apertura, lost to San Francisco, and the 2022 Clausura.

Home games are played at Estadio Los Andes II, a 2,000-seat ground in San Miguelito. Sporting wear red and black stripes at home, white away.
