Luis Tejada, one of the most prolific strikers Panama has produced, played under a name this club no longer carries. He came through when the side was still Chorrillo FC, founded in 1974 in the Panama City district of El Chorrillo with a brief closer to social work than sport: give the neighbourhood's youth something other than crime.
That version of the club reached the top flight in 2001, off the back of the 2000–01 second-division title, and went on to win three championships — the 2011 Apertura, beating Plaza Amador 4–1 in the final, the 2014 Clausura and the 2017 Apertura.
Financial trouble ended the Chorrillo FC name in 2018, when the club merged with CD Centenario and the Universidad Latina de Panamá and re-emerged as Deportivo Universitario. A year later it left the capital altogether for Penonomé, in Coclé province, where it has played since under the nickname La U.
Its ground, the Estadio Universidad Latina, known locally as El Nido del Fénix — the Phoenix's Nest — opened on 27 February 2021 with 3,500 seats. A new east stand and seating in the south end took capacity to 4,700 in November 2024. Since 2023 the fixture against UMECIT FC, the league's other club tied to a private university, has been played as the Clásico Universitario.
El Chorrillo, the district that gave the club its first name and its reason for existing, is where the story began.
