Liga Panameña de Fútbol operates as the premier professional football competition within Panama. Established in 1988 under the name Asociación Nacional Pro Fútbol, the league underwent a significant structural reorganization in 2009 to align with CONCACAF standards. This transition modernized its format and introduced the current branding. The competition functions at the highest level of the national pyramid, serving as the primary route for clubs seeking continental recognition.

The season structure differs from traditional single-tournament formats. Play is divided into two separate competitions, the Apertura and the Clausura. Each tournament crowns its own champion, creating a dynamic environment throughout the year. Teams compete in Eastern and Western conferences during the regular phase. The top performers from these conferences then advance to a knockout playoff stage to determine the overall title. This format ensures that teams remain competitive across different halves of the calendar.

Unlike many North American leagues, the LPF does not participate in the Leagues Cup. Instead, qualification for the CONCACAF Champions Cup is secured through the CONCACAF Central American Cup. Three spots are allocated based on aggregate standings within the LPF. This method of qualification highlights the league’s distinct position within the regional football hierarchy. The competition also maintains a relationship with the Segunda División, known as Liga Prom. The current champion, as of the Clausura 2024 season, is Club Atlético Independiente. The league has operated under various sponsored names, including Copa Digicel and Liga Cable Onda. These commercial partnerships reflect the evolving nature of the sport in the country.
