The Kuwait Premier League operates as the pinnacle of the local football structure, sitting directly above the Kuwait First Division. Organised by the Kuwait Football Association, the competition has evolved significantly since its inception, with the format shifting historically between six and fifteen teams. The current season structure employs a distinct two-phase approach. A standard round-robin phase determines the standings, after which the twelve participating clubs split into two separate groups.
The top six teams enter a Championship Play-off to decide the title, while the bottom six contest a Relegation Play-off. This system ensures that the stakes remain high until the final day of the campaign. Promotion and relegation links exist between this tier and the second tier, typically involving the two lowest-placed teams from the relegation group dropping to the lower level. The league maintains a clear distinction from other national competitions. Unlike the Kuwait Emir Cup, which is a knockout tournament including lower division sides, or the Kuwait Super Cup, a single-match affair, this competition focuses on sustained performance over a full season.
Success in the league has been dominated by a small number of clubs. Kuwait SC leads the historical record with twenty-one titles, followed closely by Al-Arabi and Qadsia SC, who each hold seventeen. Kuwait SC currently holds the title after securing five consecutive wins from the 2021–22 season through to 2025–26. The competition has also weathered significant external challenges, including a suspension during the 1990–91 Iraqi invasion. Early history showed Al-Arabi winning six of the first seven titles, establishing a foundation for the current competitive landscape. The league features clubs such as Al Jazira, Al Sahel, and Burgan in its current lineup alongside others. The governing body manages the official website at kuwait-fa.org.
