About

The Liga MX Sub-20 served as the official top-tier youth football league for clubs in Mexico's first division. The competition operated under a league-cup system, mirroring the structure of the senior team. Each year featured two independent half-season tournaments: the Apertura, running from July to December, and the Clausura, spanning January to May. The league consisted of the U20 squads of all 18 Liga MX clubs. Participation was mandatory and fixed based on Liga MX membership, meaning there was no promotion or relegation. Teams played a single-table regular season before the top eight advanced to a playoff phase known as the Liguilla to determine the champion. The competition was founded in 2017 by Liga MX, replacing previous youth tournaments to provide a structured development pathway. Historically, Club América Sub-20, C.D. Guadalajara Sub-20, and Santos Laguna Sub-20 were the most successful clubs, each winning five titles. América secured victories in the Apertura 2010, Clausura 2011, Apertura 2011, Clausura 2012, and Clausura 2022 tournaments. Chivas claimed titles in the Clausura 2013, Apertura 2014, Clausura 2017, Apertura 2018, and Guard1anes 2020 competitions. Santos Laguna won in the Apertura 2013, Apertura 2015, Apertura 2017, Apertura 2019, and Apertura 2021 seasons. Deportivo Toluca secured one title in the Clausura 2023 edition. The league did not carry a specific sponsor name in its title, although BBVA sponsored the broader Liga MX ecosystem. It functioned as an internal youth competition for first-division reserves rather than a professional league with independent clubs. The competition was discontinued in 2023, with youth development shifting to the Liga MX Sub-23 and other age-specific categories.
