Ararat-Armenia hold off Celje in Champions League qualifier
Ararat-Armenia secured a 2-1 victory over Celje in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round on 4 August, a result that keeps their European ambitions alive despite facing a side that controlled much of the contest. The hosts trailed early after S. Seslar converted a penalty in the twenty-first minute, but managed to turn the game around through two second-half goals. To be fair, the visitors deserved more from their dominance, yet Ararat-Armenia found a way to see it out.
After Seslar's spot-kick gave Celje the lead, A. Serobyan levelled matters before half-time in the thirty-eighth minute, keeping the Armenian side within striking distance. Tulipa picked up a yellow card in the forty-second minute as tensions built, and both managers made changes at the break with V. Tusha replacing someone for Celje. By then the match had settled into a pattern where Celje would attack while Ararat-Armenia looked to strike on the counter.
The turning point came in the seventieth minute when Franca Carlos put Ararat-Armenia ahead, a goal that shifted the momentum despite Celje's continued pressure. M. Carlier came on for the hosts in the fifty-ninth minute, and A. Kucys was introduced for Celje in the sixty-fifth as both sides tried to manage the game. Z. Banjaqui and Sandro Lima were brought on for Ararat-Armenia in the eightieth and ninetieth minutes respectively, while P. Daniel received a late yellow card before being substituted at 90+5.
The statistics tell a story of contrast: Celje registered 126 attacks compared to Ararat-Armenia's 75, and held 62 per cent possession against 38. Yet Ararat-Armenia's two shots on target found the net, while Celje's five attempts on target produced only one goal. Shots accuracy sat at 0.17 for the hosts versus 0.31 for the visitors, a reminder that football is not always decided by who has more chances.
Celje had been unbeaten in their recent outings, drawing with Maribor and Egnatia among others, while Ararat-Armenia showed vulnerability with a 4-3 win over Gandzasar and a 1-2 defeat to Shamrock Rovers. This result changes nothing in terms of qualification yet, but it gives the Armenian side something to build on. And here's the thing — it was never about possession, it was about who took their moments.
