Match report
Dinamo Zagreb put five past Zalgiris Kaunas in the third qualifying round of the Champions League on Monday night. The match at Maksimir Stadium ended 5-0, sending the Croatian side through to the next stage. To be fair, the result mirrored what many expected before kickoff.
The visitors struggled from the first whistle. Dinamo's first goal came at the 31st minute when M. Zajc found the net. Just two minutes later, S. McKenna doubled the lead. By then it was clear Zalgiris would need a miracle to stay in the tie.
The second half brought more of the same. M. Lisica added a third goal at 51 minutes, and L. Stojkovic made it four at 76. And here's the thing — Dinamo didn't stop at four. L. Kacavenda's late strike at 90+4 minutes completed the rout.
Substitutions told their own story. Zalgiris changed at 46 minutes with L. Krekovic, followed by F. Ourega at 57. Dinamo brought on A. Hoxha at 61 and Renan Oliveira at 65. By then the outcome was never in doubt.
The statistics paint a one-sided picture. Dinamo enjoyed 70 per cent possession and launched 137 attacks compared to Zalgiris's 61. The visitors managed zero shots on target all evening, while Dinamo hit the target seven times. And here's the thing — seven shots on target for five goals suggests some wastefulness.
The result means Dinamo advance to the next round of qualifying. Zalgiris's campaign ends before it truly began. The Croatian side now have a chance to prove themselves against tougher opposition in the play-off round.
