Slovan Bratislava secured a 2-1 victory over Mjällby in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round on Monday, advancing with a narrow win against the Swedish side. The match, played on 2026-08-04, saw the visitors take control after a tight first half where chances were limited. Mjällby took the lead through a penalty, but Slovan responded with two goals in the second period to turn the tie on its head.
And here's the thing about the opening exchanges — the game stayed cagey until the 58th minute when E. Stroud converted a penalty for Mjällby. Before that, A. Samuelsen picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute, suggesting the physical nature of the contest from early on. The hosts felt they had something to build on, but Slovan refused to let the match slip away.
By then the momentum had shifted. S. Camara equalised in the 78th minute, and just six minutes later M. Kianga struck in stoppage time to complete the turnaround. Substitutions came thick and fast on both sides, with A. Gajdos, M. Kukharevych, V. Granath, and A. Samuelsen all involved in the closing stages. J. Gustavsson was booked late on, but it was too little, too late for Mjällby.
To be fair, the statistics tell a story of Slovan's dominance. They recorded 117 attacks compared to Mjällby's 77, and controlled 58 per cent of possession. Yet the shot accuracy figures are telling — Mjällby hit 40 per cent of their shots on target while Slovan managed just 27 per cent. Three shots on target versus four, yet the visitors took two goals from fewer attempts.
The result leaves Slovan in third place with one defeat from one game, but the quality of performance suggests they fancy their chances in the next round. Mjällby, meanwhile, had mixed results in recent matches — a 3-0 win over Lincoln Red Imps and a 2-1 loss to Kalmar among them — but this defeat ends their European campaign. The difference came in those crucial moments, and Slovan punished them when it mattered most.
