Baník Ostrava lost 1-2 to Pardubice in the Czech Liga's eighth round at Městský Stadion on Saturday. Both sides entered the match with poor runs, Ostrava having lost five of their eight games, while Pardubice were fighting to climb from the bottom half.
And here's the thing about the first half — Ostrava controlled territory but couldn't convert. Drchal gave them the lead in the 20th minute, and they had six corners to Pardubice's three. To be fair, Pardubice didn't create much, but they stayed compact and looked dangerous on the break.
The second half changed direction. By then the match had opened up, and Tanko equalised for the visitors in the 54th minute. The home side pushed forward again, and Skrkon put them ahead in the 81st minute, but that was the last real chance of the game. Pardubice held on.
The statistics tell a familiar story. Ostrava had 61 per cent possession and 76 attacks, but only one big chance. Pardubice had 39 per cent and 59 attacks, yet created four big chances. Shots on target were 4-7 in their favour, and their accuracy was 44 per cent compared to 29 per cent.
Ostrava drop to 12th with nine points from eight games, while Pardubice move to 13th with five points. Both sides remain in the lower half, but the gap between them is closing. Cup football has its own rules, but this was league football — and the result stands.
