About the player
The goal came in Rancagua in May 2026, and it was the one that pushed O'Higgins to within a step of the Copa de la Liga semi-finals: Benjamín Schamine struck against Everton, the Chilean press labelling it a golazo, and the home side won 2-1.
Schamine had arrived in Chile only four months earlier, joining O'Higgins in January 2026 on loan from Defensa y Justicia. The move gave him the number 28 shirt and a first season outside Argentina.
The route there ran through one club. He entered the Defensa y Justicia system in 2017 and stayed, reaching the first team at 19, with a debut in the Argentinian top flight in 2023. Between 2023 and 2025 he was a regular, playing 52 league matches and contributing two goals and one assist.
His first year at O'Higgins spread across several competitions rather than one. He scored once in the Liga de Primera, and beyond the Everton goal in the Copa de la Liga — four matches there — he appeared once in the Copa Chile, four times in the Copa Libertadores and twice in the Copa Sudamericana, where he was booked against Boston River. Continental football, in other words, arrived quickly after the move.
