Guillermo Gastón Cotugno Lima

He joined Racing Club de Montevideo from Deportivo Maldonado, where continental football arrived in the form of the Copa Libertadores.

What defines him at Racing is versatility rather than a fixed slot. He is nominally a right-back, but the coaching staff has used him just as often through the centre of defence and even on the left side of the back line, a flexibility that has made him a fixture in the side rather than a specialist reserved for one system.

He has also chipped in more than defenders are usually asked to. Over three seasons in Primera he has reached double figures in goals combined, an unusual return for a centre-back-capable defender, and he added an assist during a Copa Sudamericana campaign as well. The card count has crept up season on season — six yellows, then ten — evidence of a player who defends with some physicality.

The high point of his time at the club came this year, when Racing won the Torneo Apertura, the club's first top-flight title in a long stretch. Cotugno was a regular starter through that campaign, one of the players who carried the defensive workload across a season that also included Sudamericana and league cup fixtures.

His international experience is limited to a single appearance for Uruguay's under-20 side, in which he did not score. There is no record of a senior national team call-up. At club level, though, he has become one of the more durable and adaptable defenders in the current Racing squad.
