Joe Axel Abrigo Navarro

At Coquimbo Unido, Joe Abrigo went from squad player to captain. It was there, in the 2020 Copa Sudamericana, that his form drew wider notice: he was named to the competition's ideal team.

Abrigo started out at Magallanes. From there his path became unusually well travelled for a Chilean midfielder of his generation. A spell at Audax Italiano was interrupted by a loan to Mexico, where he played for Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, before he returned to Chile and worked his way back to Coquimbo, this time as its leader on the pitch.

His second stint at Coquimbo Unido was itself broken up by two separate loan moves in 2021, first to Unión Española and then to Ñublense, before he returned once more to close out his time as captain there in 2023. That year he joined Palestino, where he continues to play.

Abrigo has spoken publicly of his ambition to represent the Chilean national team, though no call-up has followed so far. What stands out in his career instead is the contrast between the stability of his early years at Magallanes and the restlessness that came after: club changes, loans in both directions, and a captaincy earned not through longevity at one place but through what he did with it once he got there.
