About the player
Leon Mergner made his professional debut for 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2. Bundesliga against Eintracht Braunschweig, capping a rise entirely built inside the club. He joined Magdeburg's academy from Hallescher FC and worked his way through the U17 and U19 sides, where he scored 34 goals in 107 matches across all youth competitions.
His path to the first team ran through Magdeburg's reserve side. He debuted for 1. FC Magdeburg II in the NOFV-Oberliga Süd, then continued his progress in the Regionalliga Nordost. Shortly after breaking into the first team, he signed his first professional contract, tying him to the club until 2029.
Mergner plays as a central midfielder and is comfortable on either foot. He wears the number 33 shirt for Magdeburg. At this stage of his career, his story remains that of an academy product handed a chance close to home, still with everything ahead of him at senior level.
